Epilogue For 20XX [2021]

Epilogue for 20XX enters into a dialogue with the surroundings of the Stängle and Limmer nursery. It is Munich's last privately run nursery in the immediate urban space - an idyll surrounded by residential buildings and defying the roaring traffic of Schleißheimer Straße. The courtyard forms a counterpoint to its urban panorama, which is characterised by the incarnations of urban planning dreams of the economic miracle era [including the television tower and BMW fourcylinder building] and the illusion of eternal growth. The processes in the market garden are representative of the integration of human existence into the natural cycle of growth and decay that underlies an original procurement of food. 35 years after the Chernobyl disaster, mushrooms in Bavarian forests are still heavily contaminated. Mushrooms are both poison and medicine. They absorb pollutants through their root network and concentrate them in their fruiting bodies. There is an ambivalent relationship between fungi and radiation and environmental conditions strongly influenced by humans: Autochthonous fungi have been found in the Chernobyl reactor, for example, or the matsutake, which is revered in Japan and only occurs in forests that were rigorously used for forestry in the past. A substance with a similarly contradictory relationship to humans and radiation is the heavy metal lead - a poison that can protect against other poisons. Its frequent use shows these interactions [petrol, paints, water pipes, protective suits, ammunition, etc.]. It poisons humans and nature, but fungi can clean lead-contaminated soil and play a symbiotic role in the anthropogenic environment. These objects, which thrive in the ruins of capitalism, show an idea of what has happened in all these decades, what has concentrated in them and now emits sound waves through metallisation. The sound carpet is composed of fragments of a forest environment influenced by civilisation, radiation detection and the resonance space of the lead pieces.
